Velvet is a big, POWERFUL mare. She was bred by Slush Creek Walkers
in Montana and named for the Louis L'Amour character from the Sackett
Brand book. She is by Slush Creek's Jubal S, a great minded, big boned
gentle giant of a horse. Velvet is directly by the heritage sire,
Slush Creek's Jubal S.,
a gentle giant of a stallion who was the last horse produced by Calvin
Miller's Ranch. He had an exceptionally quiet and gentle nature, a nice
natural running walk and a gorgeous head. He stood 16.1 hands with
the thicker, heavier, using/pleasure horse body style. He has been given
the nickname ,"The Gentle Giant", by those that have met him
in person. Through Jubal, Velvet goes to to the 14
time World Champion, Hill's
Perfection. (Hill's
Perfection's registered name was Reyclif Mid-Merry #561395
and that was not changed; he was only campaigned as
Hills Perfection). Sun's
Merry Man, the only offspring by Hill's Perfection to reproduce,
was owned by and stood at the Double Diamond Ranch for many years.
Velvet's dam,
SCW Delight's Zephyr, is directly
by Delight's Midnight Legend aka "Gabe",
a grand-son of both Midnight Sun and Sun's Delight D. He shares a sire
with Tsuniah Sunday, the WGC lite-shod gelding and ambassador of the
TWH breed to Germany. He was bred and raised by Kathy Stumph of Amazing
Grace Tennessee Walkers. Kathy owned him until he was 18 years
old and she retired from breeding and selected Slush Creek Walkers for
his final home. There, he was bred to Velvet's dam, SCW Delight's Zephyr.
She was out of Zephyr Dakota Breeze aka "Breezy" was owned
by Slush Creek Walkers since she was a yearling and they also owned
her dam, Dakota Dixie Flash, until her death at the age of 24 years
old. Breezy has exceptional bone and muscle with a nice smooth gait. "Her
real claim to fame is brains! Breezy is smart, she can open gates and
doors, she figured out when we loaded her in the trailer she was going
to work so she would walk right up to the back of the trailer and lay
down! One time she lay down half in half out of the trailer but that
hurt so she didn’t do it again. If you’re not on the ball she will get
ahead of you." Breezy also boasts Allen’s
Gold Zephyr still on her pedigree!
We first met Velvet in 2019, when her owner,
Maggie Meyer of Rhinebeck New York, sent Velvet for a refresher with
Jarred. Velvet and Jarred hit it off immediately. It's hard to find
a horse that isn't dwarfed by Jarred's 6'4" frame. Velvet and Jarred
were a great fit...and not just size wise! Velvet became Jarred's go-to
mount. He loved her powerful way of going and go-all-day attitude. We
were sad to see her head home to New York when her training was over.
Velvet returned to us to deliver her colt by Remembrance's Merry Snip
and presented us with a chestnut colt as big and powerful as she is.
We were blessed to be given the opportunity to add Velvet to our family
permanently in November of 2020.
